Music: Beyoncé Dedicates Sam Cooke Classic to Detroit

Beyoncé Dedicates Sam Cooke Classic to Detroit
Jul 22nd 2013, 16:30, by Young Sinick

Beyoncé is continuing to show a heightened sense of awareness with respect to social and political issues of the day. On the same day she appeared with her husband Jay Z at a Travyon Martin rally, the singer also dedicated Sam Cooke‘s classic song “A Change Is Gonna Come” to the city of Detroit during a performance in the area.

“This was a unique tribute to the history of an incredible city and a celebration of the strong spirit of its people,” a rep for Beyonce told Billboard. Detroit is reportedly $18-20 billion deep in debt, the largest bankruptcy filing in U.S. history. – See more at:
Detroit recently filed for bankruptcy (which a judge subsequently rejected) due to the city’s massive debts amounting to around $18 – 20 billion, making it the largest bankruptcy filing in U.S. history.

Music: Rihanna Gets Emotional, Breaks Into Tears on Stage

Rihanna Gets Emotional, Breaks Into Tears on Stage
Jul 22nd 2013, 17:19, by Young Sinick

The last time I watched a clip of Rihanna, it was seeing her try not to stumble and bust her ass because she was drunk as hell. So, it's nice to see a different, balanced side of the singer after that.

During a recent performance in France, the pop star broke down into tears shortly before performing one of her mega hits, “Diamond.” Reason being that she's oh so grateful for all of the love her fans give her.
Rihanna explained:
"Thank you so much. I can't believe this sh-t. Y'all make me so happy, this is everything that matters to me.  And to stand here and feel the love in this room throughout this entire tour…It's coming to the end of the tour and it's sad. I hate saying 'Goodbye.'  You guys showed me so much love in this room tonight. I love you guys."

Music: Joseline Hernandez is the Bilingual Version of Gangsta Boo

Joseline Hernandez is the Bilingual Version of Gangsta Boo
Jul 22nd 2013, 20:23, by Young Sinick

Although I adore the Puerto Rican Princess, Joseline Hernandez, and support whatever efforts will make certain that she never has to go back to the strip club or the sidewalk (allegedly), I'm not sure the world needed a bilingual version of Gangsta Boo.

It's not that Joseline isn't tough. Like, I've seen her sock the hell out of Stevie J with the kind of force only similar to that of the late Andre the Giant. But given so much of Joseline's storyline about being an aspiring recording artist consisted of her letting Stevie J palm her ass in the studio and her shaking said ass in the highest of heels on stage and in the dance studio. So when Joseline finally gives us her first musical offering, I hadn't anticipated a Spanish version of Foxy Brown's “BK Anthem.”
That said, this isn't half bad. She filmed this on her own, but it doesn't look cheap at all. Granted, Stevie J standing in the background like a cheesy dope boy makes the video nearly teeter on parody status solely on principle, but other than that, visually it's cool.
I didn't pay enough attention in Spanish class in high school to know what Joseline is saying, so I'll give the floor to my Spanish-speaking readers to let me know if her rhymes are up to par. Be sure to tell me if at any time Joseline says in Spanish, “I took your dreams, hoe!” That would be an obvious shot at Somaya Reece.
I don't know, y'all. I was expecting something trashy and cluckable from Joseline. A track that would command my hands to place themselves on my knees. This isn't it, so I'm a bit disappointed.
Am I a sexist asshole for expecting Joseline to be the ‘redbone’ Trina she thinks she is? If so, sorry, feminist Jesus. I'm still a work in progress. She still gets a passing grade overall, though.
Of course, I deducted points for that “Steebie” tattoo on her arm. Girl, if you don't use some of that VH1 and club appearance money to buy yourself some self-worth. This is your video and Stevie J is acting as the Ma$e to your Diddy.
I'm pretty sure at this stage in your life you could go buy an old man and have him be your daddy — freeing yourself from this creepy hold Steebie has on you.

Movies: Support Spike Lee’s Kickstarter Project and You Can Own His Used Nikes

Support Spike Lee's Kickstarter Project and You Can Own His Used Nikes
Jul 23rd 2013, 12:39, by Justine Browning

Spike Lee has become the latest celeb to utilize Kickstarter. The filmmaker is seeking just over $1.2 million funding for his yet untitled project now called “The Newest Hottest Spike Lee Joint” and he’s offering all kinds of sweet rewards to doners. Well, that is, depending on your bank account and how big a fan you are of the “25th Hour” helmer.

If you want Lee to send you a shout out via Twitter, you simply have to pledge $5 while $20 will grant you online access to the film when it opens. But if you want to aim higher and attend the NY or LA premiere of the flick, that’ll cost you $250. And if you’re desperate to have a phone chat with him, hopefully you have an extra $500 to spare.
If second hand shoes with writing on them are your thing, you can get a used pair of Nikes for $750, though if you ask us, that one’s a bit bizarre.
Do you have $5,000 and producing aspirations? Well, you’re in luck! Five G’s will get you an Associate Producer credit.
So how do you score the ultimate prize? Simply shell out $10,000 (which some have already done!) and you can go to dinner with Spike and have the “honor” and “priveldge” of taking in a Knicks game with him courtside.
Once intended for emerging artists, Kickstarter has become a new way for people who already have a shit ton of money to ask for yours. The upside to this is that many filmmakers can go around the studio system and freely create a project without restrictions, which is exactly what Spike Lee is doing.
So far he’s raised a little over $90,000 (as of the time of this posting) with nearly 600 backers and 29 days to go.

Music: Beyonce’s Hair Got Stuck in a Fan at Her Concert and She Kept Performing Anyway

Beyonce's Hair Got Stuck in a Fan at Her Concert and She Kept Performing Anyway
Jul 24th 2013, 03:08, by The Master Chief

Leave it to Beyonce to get her hair stuck in a fan during a concert, and keep on performing as if nothing happened, which is exactly what happened Monday night in Montreal.

Bey was in the middle of singing her show’s closing number “Halo” when her hair suddenly got caught in an electric fan that was sitting behind her. But being the consummate professional that she is, Beyonce kept right on singing while a few stage hands (and some fans) help rescue her hair from the fan’s blades.
Showing her sense of humor, Bey later posted a video of her hair crisis on Instagram, as well as a remixed version of “Halo,” in which she makes fun of herself for getting her hair trapped in a fan.
“Gravity can’t begiiiiiiin/to pull me out of the fan again/I felt my hair was yankiiiiiiiin/From the fan that’s always hatiiiiiiiin,” she wrote. “I got snatched, 2 snaps… goodnight all.”

Music: Mariah Carey is Planning More “Beautiful” Remixes, But Why?

Mariah Carey is Planning More "Beautiful" Remixes, But Why?
Jul 24th 2013, 17:00, by Young Sinick

It’s not that I don’t enjoy a good Mariah Carey remix. After all, she has so, so many.

There’s the R&B mix of “Always Be My Baby” with Xscape. The “Make It Last Forever” spin of “Thank God I Found You” with Joe and Nas. Also, who can forget about the ODB-boosted remix of “Fantasy?”
And even though not enough people paid it any mind, the “H.A.T.E.U.” remix with OJ Da Juiceman, Big Boi, and Gucci Mane was the one. Same for the “Candy Bling” remix with T-Pain. Oh, and if you haven’t heard it, get into that Def Club mix of the fellatio-celebrating lullaby, “Honey.” It’s like gospel, house, and R&B had an orgy and a beautiful baby came as a result.
As you can tell, I am a Mariah Carey lover, though I have to say, when it comes to word o fanother “Beautiful” remix, I can honestly say that I am not excited.
Like, Mariah, I love you the way you love rainbows and cotton candy, but maybe it’s time to move on.
You’ve released what feels like 15 remixes of this track already. None have caught on yet and maybe that’s a sign that the song has done all that it is going to do. It was a modest hit — peaking at no. 15 on the Hot 100 — and that’s a good set up.
Now it’s time for you to move on to the new single, preferably the track Mike Will Made It produced for you. It worked for Ciara.

Music: Ariana Grande Will Be What Christina Aguilera Was Supposed To Be

Ariana Grande Will Be What Christina Aguilera Was Supposed To Be
Jul 25th 2013, 14:00, by Young Sinick

Ever since I became aware of what an Ariana Grande was, I've been enamored. I love her new single “The Wa”" with Mac Miller.

Musically, the song gives me teases of white Ashanti and Ja Rule from a voice that probably makes Mariah Carey want to nest on the blood of a youth ala The Snow Queen from Snow White and the Huntsmen.
Ariana might not match the might of Mariah Carey's voice before the cigarettes and chardonnay did their damage, but she definitely has the kind of chops that make you take notice.
Listen to this:
And this:
Usually when I hear someone try to pull off a Mariah Carey song, within seconds I have to rush to hear the real thing the way God intended. With Ariana, I at least want to wait half a minute. Gon', girl. That is impressive. No one can top vintage Mariah, but to be able to pull off a cover of one of her songs that well says a lot about Ariana's talent and potential. Now someone needs to tell her to cover Mimi's "Honey."
Check this one out, too:
So this is what Rihanna's songs sound like when someone who genuinely cares about singing is performing them? To Rih-Rih's credit, though, she has the attitude to pull off the track better. Be that as it may, consider me a fan of Ariana. I've already given her $1.29 for "The Way" and I just gave her another for "Baby I."
I'm ready to give her more so long as she keeps singing good songs with that fantastic voice.
I feel as though Ariana Grande will be what Christina Aguilera was supposed to be. "The Way" reminds me of X-Tina tracks like "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" and "When You Put Your Hands On Me." Those songs had an obvious flirtation and underlying sexual tone in the case of the latter, but it wasn't full out freaktastic. You know, ala "Dirrty" in which Christina is rolling around in the mud and humping the wrestling mat.
I don't mind Christina wanting to sing about the sex, but I do take issue with her singing like the choir director of Alcide's wolfpack on True Blood. She doesn't even sound the same anymore as a result of all those banshee cries — and then has the nerve to drop back to back lengthy albums full of fillers.
While distraught Christina Aguilera fans continue to pray for the future of her music career and throat, I want to additionally send out good vibes to Ariana Grande. May you continue to control your voice while building its ability and keep your music fun and bop-friendly. For you are the future. Amen.

TLC: Working With Lady Gaga, Releases New VH1 Movie Trailer
Jul 25th 2013, 19:00, by Young Sinick

Maybe it’s because it feels like it’ll never work without Left Eye. Perhaps it’s due to me still being bitter that “Touch Myself” never took off and T-Boz never got a fair shake at solo stardom.

Whatever it is, I’m not as excited about word of a TLC reunion as I was when SWV got back together and when we all thought En Vogue would finally do the same. Even so, the train on their reunion is moving and you best get on the bus if you’re even a wee bit curious.
In a press conference in New York, T-Boz and Chilli confirmed that their greatest hits album will drop on October 15 via Epic Records. The album will include remastered and redone versions of their classic hits like “Waterfalls” and “No Scrubs.”
Additionally, there will be some new tracks and there are some top notch talent that have attached their names to the project. This includes Ne-Yo and Lady Gaga who have each penned songs for the remaining duo. Drake and J. Cole will be featured on two of the new tracks.
It’s pretty impressive that Lady Gaga has submitted a song. Like, that could be major for them in a perfect world. I may not be excited about the new music, but my interest is at least piqued now. And I’ve got to give it to Auntie T-Boz. She is taming that weight down and even though she’s not twerking at light speed anymore, she’s obviously been working on it.
This could either go supremely well or terribly, terribly wrong. Speaking of, VH1 has released the trailer for their biopic entitled CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story. Quite a few are acting as if it’s the worst thing they’ve ever seen. I don’t agree. In fact, Lil’ Mama looks surprisingly convincingly as Left Eye. Shout out to you, girl, and your make up artist for painting you correctly.
Now, here’s the trailer:

Movies: Spike Lee: Tyler Perry and I Are Cool

Spike Lee: Tyler Perry and I Are Cool
Jul 26th 2013, 17:40, by Young Sinick

When I first heard that Spike Lee, a famous Hollywood director who is a millionaire with direct connections to several other millionaires, is turning to Kickstarter to ask regular ass people to fund his movie, I was confused. However, he tried to explain himself in an interview with theGrio. I’m still confused, though.

Spike Lee said:
"I needed to go to Kickstarter to get this film made because this is not necessarily a Hollywood film. It's more like an independent film."
But, but, but, but: You’re rich. Why not fund it yourself or turn to private investors like Marlon Wayans?
In any event, Spike had more to say about the movie he’s describing as "the newest hottest Spike Lee Joint”:
"It's the type of a film that for it best to work, you gotta go in knowing the least amount of information about it as possible. What I will say is that we're calling it psychological bloody thriller, with naked black people… butt naked. Now who's made a film like that? My man Tyler made a film like that… and I say that in all love, because me and Tyler are cool."
Well, that’s great he and Tyler Perry are cool, but I’m saying: Tyler couldn’t give you the money? I thought Kickstarter was more so for creatives with no industry contacts and wealth. Apparently not.

Movies: Garrett Hedlund Won’t Be Spanking His Way Through “Fifty Shades of Grey” Movie

Garrett Hedlund Won't Be Spanking His Way Through "Fifty Shades of Grey" Movie
Jul 27th 2013, 03:14, by Justine Browning

Garrett Hedlund apparently isn’t too eager to wield a riding crop on-screen. The hunky “Tron” star has reportedly declined to take on the role of Christian Grey for the film version of the erotic phenomenon “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

“Doing a possible trilogy was too big a commitment, and producers wouldn’t let him do just one film,” a source close to the actor allegedly told Us Weekly.
The sultry novel follows a 21-year-old virgin named Anastasia Steele, who interviews a gorgeous 27-year-old billionaire for her college’s literary magazine only to find herself being pursued by him.
He eventually proposes that she become his sexual submissive, even presenting her with a contract of what they can and can’t do in the bedroom. As it turns out, Christian is into BDSM and likes to spank, whip, and tie up his conquests.
Despite it’s ridiculous premise and Anastasia’s eye-rolling inner monologue about her inner-goddess, the series has sold a whopping 70 million copies.
Last year, the Telegraph reported that “Fifty Shades of Grey” is the best selling book of all time in the U.K. — a country that has produced some of the greatest literature that the world has to offer. That’s both sad and fascinating at the same time.
In March 2012, Sony Pictures secured the film rights to the book for $5 million and the producing team behind “The Social Network,” Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, to produce the flick.
In June 2013, Sam Taylor-Johnson (who helmed the acclaimed “Nowhere Boy”) was announced as the film’s director. It has been somewhat surprising that a smutty BDSM tale would warrant such a stellar behind the scenes team, but hey.
News that Hedlund was approached to star in the film means that the production team is looking to cast a recognizable face in the role as opposed to a complete unknown.
Furthermore, Hedlund’s scene-stealing turn in “On the Road” has made him a respected young actor, proving that the filmmakers are seeking more than just a pretty face to take on the role of Christian Grey.

Music: Solange Rumored to Play Aaliyah in Upcoming Biopic?

Solange Rumored to Play Aaliyah in Upcoming Biopic?
Jul 30th 2013, 22:55, by Young Sinick

I don’t believe this rumor in the least bit, but I can’t help but chuckle. Seriously, someone out there really, really wants a movie made about the life about Aaliyah.

That explains why every so often we always hear word of some singer or actress being tapped to play her in a purported biopic. Solange is the latest victim of said rumors and I’ll definitely only believe it when it’s on Deadline.
In the meantime, here’s what Illseed of AllHipHop has to say:
OH…here's something else to rile up the fans of the one and only Aaliyah.
There is a crazy rumor that the chick Solange has landed the role to play Aaliyah an upcoming biopic. Now, the rumor is Solange went out for the role earlier in the month and ended up getting it this week. She reportedly will be working with the same people that did the movie "Think Like A Man."
I don't know. I didn't even know Solange was any sort of actress. But, she almost never has her hair straight like Aaliyah did. This is as close to Aaliyah as could see with Solange.
To be fair to Sister Knowles, it really doesn’t matter how a person wears their hair in their daily life with respect to playing a character. After all, that is what make up and hair stylists are for.
Now, I don’t think an Aaliyah movie would be a bad idea per se. However, I’m not sure we’d get the whole story — which is the point of a biopic film. But since the late singer’s allure refuses to go away — and rightfully so — I suppose eventually a movie will indeed be made.
Here’s to hoping it’s done right, though. This is the part where you can cheer or bitch about Solange potentially playing Aaliyah on the big screen. Enjoy.

Movies: Jennifer Aniston Explains How She Got Her Stripper Body for “We’re the Millers” Movie Role

Jennifer Aniston Explains How She Got Her Stripper Body for "We're the Millers" Movie Role
Jul 31st 2013, 12:30, by Justine Browning

If you’ve seen the “We’re the Millers” trailer, you already know two things. First, the movie unfortunately looks pretty bad. Second, Jennifer Aniston has an AMAZING body.

In the upcoming comedy, the actress shows that she doesn’t just look great for 44, she looks great in general. This becomes apparent in a scene in which her character, a stripper, performs a dance for a group of drug lords. So what’s her secret to getting fit, aside from being blessed?
“I was on a very like, you know, greens and vegetables and lean proteins and kale,” Aniston told Access Hollywood. “When I really wanted to have a cheat day. I had to have a kale chip.”
The “Friends” alum also discussed her fear of exposing herself while filming the raunchy scene.
“I had no taping. I really just doubled my bras. I had a thong and then two pairs of underwear,” Aniston added. “Why I thought that was going to help protect anything is beyond me. Because, that’s just like ridiculous . . . I was like, ‘No, I need three bras! I need three bras because God forbid that one, if it’s gonna escape!’”
In the film, Jason Sudeikis plays a drug dealer who agrees to go to Mexico to pick up a batch of marijuana for his boss (Ed Helms). There’s just one problem, he can’t alert law enforcement. He decides to round up a fake family that includes an exotic dancer (Aniston), who pretends to be his preppy wife, a homeless girl (Emma Roberts), who portrays his daughter, and a pothead (Will Poulter), who he passes off as his son.
Off-screen, the star’s life is a bit tamer than that. As you may have heard (repeatedly), Aniston is currently planning her wedding to actor/screenwriter Justin Theroux. No word yet on when they’ll tie the knot, but Aniston says there’s no rush because they “already feel married.”
“We just want to do it when it's perfect, and we're not rushed, and no one is rushing from a job or rushing to a job,” she told the Associated Press. "And, you know, we already feel married."
She added, “We have yet to set any dates. There have been no cancelled weddings. There have been no postponed weddings … There have been no arguments about where to get married. Just clearing all that up.”

Music: Solange is Doing Her New Album HER Way

Solange is Doing Her New Album HER Way
Aug 2nd 2013, 13:04, by Young Sinick

Although I enjoyed a good portion of Sol-Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams, I didn’t really see it for Solange’s 2012 EP, True. I got the inspiration behind it, but it came across as Melatonin music to me all the same. I do realize I’m in the minority, though, and many of Solange’s fans are pressed like Kenya Moore in front of a camera crew over what’s next.

So I bring you details of her forthcoming full length album by way of Billboard.com. As most of you heard, Solange got a label deal with Sony. Yes, nepotism is the best thing ever. If only the rest of us were as lucky. Anyway, it sounds like it’s going to be more of the same. If you’re into that, congratulations. For the rest of us, I’m turning “T.O.N.Y.” back on in memoriam.
From Billboard.com:
You just shared some new details about your next album, which will be released through your own label, Saint Records, distributed through Sony. We had originally heard you might be releasing music through Columbia – what's the story?
I mean, it's distributing through Sony, bottom line, and I was just incredibly excited to have a space and a house for all my new projects. And I have so many ideas for other projects. And I think it's just really incredible to be a young woman and I feel so blessed and lucky and honored to be able to be in a position to do that. It's been a passion of mine to do that forever, I grew up seeing how the music business works from very different sides and I've conjured up a lot of knowledge to apply.
Is the idea with Saint that you'll be signing other artists as well?
For sure. I'm actually working on the first project, which will involve me in some kind of way but it will absolutely involve other artists as well. I have so many friends who've put me on to so much great music. And we just have that endless conversation about new upcoming great artists that might not get the exposure they deserve on an independent level. There's so much magic happening right now on an independent level and I'm excited to be attached to that.
You took a long hiatus between albums before releasing “True.” Do you have a timeframe yet for this next album?
I'm actually trying to give myself a deadline this time around. One of the pros of being independent is having that space and that time. But it's also a major con when you don't set aside a deadline and keep going and keep going. When you have a goal in mind you definitely stay motivated. I'm trying to stay motivated because I know it took four years before my last record came out. [laughs] That is not happening — it’s gonna come out next year.
Is there a person or a team at Sony that you're reporting to as part of your new label?
No. Absolutely not. The infrastructure of this record in terms of the creative process is absolutely the same as the last one. I'm making the music that I want to make. I'm in my own space and it's just incredible to be able to continue to do that.
And just in case you missed it, here’s homegirl’s recent performance at a Brooklyn laundromat:

Movies: New “Diana” Trailer Shows Romance and Heartbreak of the People’s Princess

New "Diana" Trailer Shows Romance and Heartbreak of the People's Princess
Aug 7th 2013, 01:00, by Justine Browning

The first full length trailer for “Diana” has finally arrived! The highly anticipated film features Naomi Watts as Princess Diana and chronicles the famed Royal’s whirlwind life.

The initial promo for the film focused on the Princess’s life from the outside looking in.
The problem with that was, as the trailer puts it, Diana was the “most famous woman in the world” and consequently, so much of her life was captured by the media. Her glamorous red carpet appearances and humanitarian photo ops are all things we’ve seen before.
Thankfully, the full trailer shows that the flick delves into the gritty reality of Diana’s world and challenges the notion that royal life is one of privilege and excitement. Furthermore, the biopic seems to offer a critique on how vile the world of celebrity can be.
It’ll be interesting to see the duality of the Princess’s life, as she was repeatedly torn apart in the tabloids, yet adored by millions throughout the world.
“Diana” centers on the Princess’s doomed romance with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan, who was arguably the love of her life. Their relationship reportedly crumbled due to the intense media scrutiny that surrounded her every move.
Not surprisingly, Watts has generated considerable Oscar buzz for the role and it’s about time she’s a frontrunner for the award.
She was unjustly snubbed by the Academy for “Mulholland Dr.” in 2001, despite the fact that her performance in the head-scratching shocker was one of the best on-screen turns that year.
In 2003, she earned a nod for her haunting portrayal of a grieving mother battling drug addiction but lost out to Charlize Theron for “Monster.”
Last year, her portrayal of a desperate Tsunami survivor in “The Impossible” assured that she was among the list of Best Actress nominees. Unjustly, the odds were stacked against Watts, whose riveting performance should have made her a top contender.
Few believed the actress had a chance at taking home the gold statue and they were right because Jennifer Lawrence ended up nabbing the coveted honor. Hopefully, the Naomi’s luck with the Academy will turn around.
“Diana” is set to debut on October 10.

Diddy and Mase Reunited at Drake's OVO Fest

I’ve got to give it to Aaliyah’s creepiest and most famous stan, Aubrey Graham. The man knows how to put on a show.

Drake held his 4th annual OVO Festival in his real hometown of Toronto and offered attendees a wide array of surprises. This included appearances from Kanye West, Big Sean, and the surviving members of TLC and their new BFF, Lil’ Mama. Plus, Drake actually got Diddy and Ma$e to reunite.
Yes, the former Bad Boy all stars performed “Feel So Good” and “Mo Money, Mo Problems.” I felt like a middle school kid all over again watching the two perform those hits. That said, don’t y’all go try doing new music. Nuh-uh. Just do the classics every once in a while.
